The Prevalence of Hypertension in Ghana: A Growing Health Concern

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a significant public health issue in Ghana, affecting a substantial portion of the population. According to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in PLOS ONE, the pooled prevalence of hypertension in Ghana is approximately 27% ¹.

Understanding the Prevalence

  • Nationwide Prevalence: Applying the 27% prevalence rate to Ghana’s adult population translates to around 5.27 million people living with hypertension.
  • Regional Variations: The prevalence of hypertension varies across different regions in Ghana. The coastal and middle geo-ecological belts have a higher prevalence (28% and 29%, respectively) compared to the northern belt (13%).
  • Urban-Rural Gap: Contrary to expectations, the prevalence of hypertension is similar in both rural and urban populations, suggesting that lifestyle changes and dietary habits are bridging the gap between these two settings.

Awareness and Control

  • Low Awareness: Only about 35% of individuals with hypertension are aware of their condition, which means nearly two-thirds of adults with hypertension in Ghana are undiagnosed and untreated.
  • Poor Control: Among those aware of their condition, only 22% are on treatment, and a mere 6% have their blood pressure under control.

Implications and Recommendations

The high prevalence of hypertension in Ghana, coupled with low awareness and poor control, necessitates increased investments in cardiovascular health. Healthcare authorities should prioritize:

  • Community Engagement: Educating the public about hypertension, its risks, and the importance of regular check-ups.
  • Task-Shifting Programmes: Implementing nurse-led interventions to improve hypertension management.
  • Healthcare Resource Allocation: Allocating sufficient resources to address the growing burden of hypertension.
